Sarah Jane Whitehouse

At the Gallery Hop the other day I saw many great pieces of art, but there was two paintings in particular that caught my eye. I had to find out who this artist was.

Her name is Sarah Jane Whitehouse, she is a native of Lexington, KY. Her website is a bit out of date, but has great information about her background and education. http://www.sjwcasablanca.co.uk/

This is one of the pieces I saw at the art show, "A Slumbered Alchemy." Her other one is the first one that intrigued my interest as soon as I walked into the door. But I could not find any images of it to share with you.

Her work is very surrealist and I love how it makes me think. As an artist, I like other artists can push my mind to think. Whether it's how did they make that, what kind of materials did they use, what were they thinking, how did they come up with this, etc? It makes me think on a deeper level of creativity. I believe it can doing nothing but make me improve.

Both of the pieces can be found at the Topographic Relief exhibit at the Art Place Gallery. On Tuesday, October 18, from 5:30-7:00pm they will have an exhibit reception. The artists should be there that night to talk to people. I hope I can attend so I can ask Sarah some questions.

Artist of the Week: Diane L. Wilson

Diane has a blog called Studio DLW where she shows her newest artwork and the prices of her work. There isn't much on there to describe her except that she is a 3D Postmodernism Expressionist. It is interesting how her work has life to it where it comes right off the canvas. Check it out yourself at http://studiodlw.wordpress.com/. Here is also few examples from her blog.

Artist Blogger: Megan Eckman

Megan was a nice enough blogger to discover my blog and left a comment. It made me wonder who is this woman? Is she also a artist? Of course she is and she is really good. I am glad so commented on my blog so I could find her. I love illustration. I had a professor tell me once I should minor in illustration but I don't think I can draw well enough for that. Meaning I can't draw people. I can make collages of people just can't draw or paint them. Well anyways Megan blogs like most people what they love and what goes on in her life. What I love is her blogging of her thought process of her pieces. Its so interesting to see how an artist made those jumps into their final project. Here is an example of that on one of her recent pieces she posted "Imogene Coming Home."

The thought process for Megan began after she read the book "Imogene's Antlers." She shows inspiration is always around us we just have to capture it. Please check Megan Eckman's blog out at http://studiomme.blogspot.com/ . It will be a blog I will visit often.

Artist of the Week : Matt Manley

I don't have much to saw about this artist except that his work caught my eye awhile ago and I saved his website so I could revisit it. Now when thinking who will I write about this week I decided to revisit him. I still don't have much to say because he hasn't written too much about himself on his website either. His work is illustration with several steps. All I can think when I look at his work that all these human figures and body parts shown they way he does creates a deeper meaning. Below is a explanation of his work and examples. You can find more of his work at http://www.mattmanley.com/index.html.

Artists of the Week : Sandford Birdsey & Martha dePoo

On my recent cruise that I went on we stopped in beatiful Key West, FL. I only got to spend a measly 3 hours in the town but I fell in love. It reminded me of Savannah and Tybee Island in Georgia where I first attended college. The architecture and environment is so lovely. Touring the town the quickest way we could by the Old Town Trolley. After it my dad found no interest in the Key West Art Center http://www.keywestartcenter.com/ and decided to take a quick look. There was two watercolor paintings that caught my eye. I soon talked to the lady working the desk. I knew they were very similar in style but I found out one of the artists was teacher to the other. It was very interesting to find this out. The teacher, Sandford Birdsey had her studio not even a 10 min walk away and I was told I could go visit. Shame that I couldn't though. I was supposed to be boarding the ship very soon. So I got both artists names and websites so I could learn more about them.

Sandford Birdsey's website http://www.signofsandford.com/ quickly wraps up the artist to show her well known talents.
Sandford Birdsey is an internationally known artist who lives and works in Key West, Florida. Her watercolor paintings are in several noted private collections including that of the late President John Fitzgerald Kennedy and the Phillip Morris Collection.
Reviews of Sandford's work have been in Time Magazine, The New York Times, Art News, Arts, Journal American and Sea History.
Sandford is a founding member of the American Society of Marine Artists. She is also a member of the Florida Watercolor Society and the Key West Art Center. Her work has been exhibited in shows around Florida and at the New York Colliseum, the Twin Towers and at the Whitney Museum in New York City.

To find out that she is so well known is amazing I haven't heard about her before. But I don't know much about current artists, I learn about mostly about those in the past. Below is some of her work shown from her website.

Another artist's work that caught my eye in that gallery was Martha dePoo. Martha was taught by many different people stated on her website including Sandford Birdsey. Their work is similar but Sandford's art is looser and less detail than Martha's work. Both artists use amazing colors.

Martha dePoo is a Key West native and always was involved with art and colors but didn't become a full time artist until 1984. On her website http://www.marthadepoo.com/ she says this about her subject matter.

Her current focus is capturing the unique and fast disappearing flavor of old Key West and the surrounding keys.

" I really didn't have a choice, my mother and paternal grandmother were both successful artists, and they instilled in me the desire to create and a deep appreciation of the beauty that surrounds us."

Martha DePoo

Both of their work is beautiful and so is Key West. I can't wait to go back one day with friends so I can learn more and have some fun next time.

Artist of the Week : Justin Vining

Ok I have found one of my new favorite artists. I was friend with an artist on Twitter but I never really saw much of his work or knew nothing about him. Today he listed that he uploaded more pictures in an album on Facebook and I decided to check it out. I fell in love. He does alot of painting and the same type of decorpaging I love to use, but haven't been able to use in awhile. On his Facebook he had many images of him working on his work and gallery shows. He goes to schools and talks to the kids. He use to be an elementry school art teacher and now is an law student and full time artist. He is an artist I will be able to get much inspiration from for a long time. Well everything but the law school thing. I'll stick away from that. I have alot of ideas for new artworks to do once summer comes just from viewing his work today.

Oh and Heather.... by the way I know you will notice this from his pictures but he's cute and 28. I know that would be the stuff you would be wanting to know. lol.

On his website http://www.justinvining.com/ he describes himself on his artist profile as:

I am an artist and a full time law student.
Creating is an adventure I get lost in.
I believe in enjoying life and making a difference.
I try not to overlook the small things.
I enjoy hope, beauty, trust and love.
You have to believe in yourself before people will believe in you.

You can also find him at  http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=2380117&id=17532053549#!/justinvining?v=app_4949752878 and https://twitter.com/justinvining. Below is some pictures featuring him and his work. I would look up more to share about him but with finals coming up soon I'll have to wait until summer break to find enough time for that. If you have time please look him up he is an amazing artist.

Artist of the Week : Shawn Barber

This is another artist that I found out about in the Art Calender magazine (http://artcalendar.com/home.asp), Shawn Barber. What made him stand out to me is the concentration of his two painting series, dolls and tattoed portraits. The dolls are creepy and sadistic, because it is so different it kinda interests me. Most of his work is of the tattooed portraits. He not only captures the person but the aspect of the tattoos on their bodies and shows that it is part of them. They are sensual, sexy, and tough depending on the person. He is having a tattoo portraits solo show at Joshua Liner Gallery in NYC on April 24th. Below is a few of his works shown on his website, but if you like to see more his website is http://sdbarber.com/.
